The exhibition I GOT UP (Longtemps, je me suis couché de bonne heure) at ECHO in Cologne, 2022 follows from I GOT UP at Hot Wheels Athens in Athens, 2021 and I GOT UP at gb agency in Paris, 2021.
The photographs commissioned from Marianne Marić during Thomas Ducasse’s performance for I GOT UP AT 8:59 AM OCT. 19 2021 are based on the “One Day Portrait/ Tagesportrait” series, which stemmed from the “Year portraits/ Jahresportraits” works developed by Friedl Kubelka Von Gröller over several decades. In these photographs, Marianne Marić proposes her own interpretation of the “One-Day-Portrait” with works confined to the time span of one-hour corresponding to the duration of the actor Thomas Ducasse’s awakening during the performance I GOT UP AT 8:59 AM OCT. 19 2021.
For the second iteration of I GOT UP at gb agency in Paris in October 2021, Serapis Maritime was commissioned for a new bed sheet related to the Parisian context. The Greek art and fashion entity made Engine Room Cabin In Proust Satin Blue Silk, 2021 which shows a precarious bed of a sailor in a cabin of a Mediterranean tanker. For the first iteration of I GOT UP in Athens in June 2021, their bedsheet print Faidonas’ Gaze, 2021 depicted a detail from a photo taken by Faidonas Spyropoulos, a sailor onboard a tanker ship and a friend of Serapis.

The story of this one-hour film is adapted from the work of conceptual artist On Kawara I GOT UP AT 8:59 AM OCT.19 1968, whose principle consists of sending a postcard each day to different recipients, containing the time and place of his awakening. In Paris, on October 19th, 2021, the actor Thomas Ducasse, who had slept in the exhibition space since the previous day, woke up at 8:59 am in the presence of the public invited to attend. The film invites its audience to relive this communion. The scenario, common to both the performance and the film, focuses on another temporal segment. The morning of October 19, 1961 was the day when the daily press in France widely reported on the events that had begun on October 17 in the capital, which had been under curfew against North Africans. The Algerian demonstrations were violently repressed by the Parisian and national police and led to a massacre that was censored by the authorities until the 19th.
